Impact Story: Progress for maternal and child health in Vietnam

Details

HealthBridge Foundation of Canada and representatives from Global Affairs Canada and the Tenaquip Foundation recently joined local staff and the Center for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP) in Son La Province, Vietnam to visit the communities involved in the Saving lives of mothers and children in Nepal and Vietnam project.

The team was warmly welcomed to local health facilities and remote villages where they met with local health staff, Ethnic Minority Midwives and Village Health Workers to learn more about the situation of maternal and child health in the region, and hear updates about project activities.

While in Son La Province, the team also had the opportunity to observe local health workers interacting with communities, including a food workshop with pregnant women and new mothers, and a maternal health knowledge exchange with husbands and fathers.

Key highlights of the visit included:

  • Attending the graduation ceremony of 19 Ethnic Minority Midwives, who will provide essential health services to women and children in remote communities;
  • Witnessing an incubator, provided by the project, keep safe a prematurely born infant;
  • Watching male Village Health Workers use culturally sensitive videos to share important maternal and child health information with ethnic minority husbands and fathers.

HealthBridge was pleased to see that local health workers now have more resources and knowledge to better meet the health and nutrition needs of women and children in their communities. As the project progresses, CCIHP and HealthBridge will continue to work within the local health system to ensure women and children in the most remote communities have access to the care and nutrition they need to thrive.
