A new report from Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF) and HealthBridge Foundation of Canada shares the results of a walkability study in Nagpur, India. The study conducted a qualitative assessment of the pedestrian facilities in Nagpur, including safety, security and convenience for pedestrians.
The Walkability Study surveyed the quality of footpaths and other pedestrian infrastructure in eight selected areas of the city. The study also examined pedestrians’ perception of available infrastructure and government policies and institutions responsible for this infrastructure. The study found that progress to improve pedestrian infrastructure has been slow due to the absence of a dedicated institution to govern pedestrian infrastructure.
Walkability is the measure of how friendly an area is to pedestrians. Walkability can be affected by the presence, absence and quality of footpaths, traffic, and safety, among others. Walkability studies are a key component of HealthBridge’s Livable Cities program. Livable Cities improves the livability of cities by ensuring access for the most vulnerable to healthy transportation, healthy foods, parks and public spaces.
