In my last blog I mentioned the SDGs and the upcoming Paris discussion of the climate change convention. A very modest goal for the SDGs is to emphasize walking and cycling under Goal 11 about inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities. In order to address climate change we must prioritize walking, cycling, and public transit, not cars.
An even more radical, but potentially powerful and game-changing, solution would be to get cars and motorbikes out of our cities, so that environmentally-friendly and healthy transport modes could flourish. Not only would we greatly reduce carbon emissions, but we would also have far fewer injuries and deaths from road crashes, cleaner air, quieter cities, vastly more space and money available, and far more vibrant communities.
Hard to imagine how to do so or what a carfree city would be like? HealthBridge recently co-produced a documentary on the topic, in response to the film Disruption. Read more, and watch Recovery from Disruption:
