Today, as so often happens, there is political turmoil in Dhaka. As a result, almost the only vehicles on the main street this morning were cycle rickshaws. It was quiet, peaceful; the air was fresh; and crossing the street was a breeze. So much so that I slowed down and almost broke into a dance partway across to the great amusement of passersby. It’s far too easy to take or permanently impair life with a car. We allow cars to restrict people’s movements to a ridiculous extent. On a street without cars, the absurdity of a street with them becomes all that more clear. And what a relief to enjoy the serenity and to envision a slower, yes, but gentler and less violent future.
