Yesterday, for the first time, I rode in a critical mass ride. That such a thing could occur in Dhaka was almost unbelievable; they only started a few months ago. The ride was great fun, and the level of interest in cycling and obsession over different types of bikes by local youth was impressive; who knew? The turnout, though less than usual, was over 100, including several women and a handful of foreigners. As we cycled through the city, I couldn’t resist shouting out slogans: We want people-friendly transport! Bicycles are the best way to get around!! We don’t pollute (er, except for noise)!!! Bystanders were bemused; some waved and cheered, others speculated on the reason for our group outing. As for the cyclists, I don’t know how many will decide that it’s safe enough to ride on other days of the week (Friday is our weekly holiday), but if they do, the benefits would be considerable: not just health and money savings, but in the congested traffic conditions of Dhaka, by far the fastest way to get around is by bicycle. A trip that takes 90 minutes by car or 40 by motorcycle can take just 25 by bicycle. So much for motorization making trips faster! And so I look forward not only to many more group bike rides, but to a movement to reclaim the streets not just on special occasions, but every day of the year.
