Southeast Asian initiative on tobacco tax
Details
International evidence shows that the most important part of an integrated strategy to reduce tobacco use is regular increases in tobacco tax, so that affordability decreases over time. Achieving a government policy that will result in regular increases in the price of tobacco products is extremely difficult, but the resulting decreases in tobacco use, and improvements in public health, make the effort worthwhile. This project provided policymakers with research-based evidence of the effectiveness of improved tobacco tax systems and sustainable funding mechanisms, and also provided technical assistance to implement such policies.
