Project
Description
In order to reduce the disease and early death caused by tobacco use, strong national laws and policies, including taxation policies, are vital. Vietnam recently passed a comprehensive tobacco control law, but this alone will not bring about the desired effects without a strong program for implementation. This project thus aimed to support and strengthen the implementation of Vietnam’s tobacco control law, and to create an enabling tax environment that would support the prevention and reduction of tobacco consumption in Vietnam. Specifically, the project would: support the government in developing and using guidelines for effective implementation of laws; build agencies’ capacity for implementation and communication of laws; expose and hinder the tobacco industry’s efforts to interfere with implementation of laws, and engage in advocacy to complement and support the government’s efforts. While the project addressed tobacco law overall, its specific focus was smoke-free public transportation.
