
Dr. Mark Young MD, MHSc. is a public health physician with over 35 years experience in the medical field. After completing a medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1983, Dr. Young worked under an appointment with the United Church of Canada as a medical doctor in First Nation’s communities in Bella Bella, and Hazelton, BC, as well as in Lesotho, Africa.
After completing a Master of Health Science (MHSc) degree in Community Medicine and Epidemiology from the University of British Columbia in 1994, he worked for almost 25 years in the international child health field, first as a public health physician in Malawi, and then as Senior Health Policy Advisor for the Canadian International Development Agency in Ottawa.
Dr. Young served as Senior Health Specialist and Chief of Child and Community Health for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) from 2002 until his retirement in 2018. This included two years as Chief of Health for UNICEF in Ghana. During his time with UNICEF, Dr. Young was responsible for overseeing the core UNICEF child health program areas of malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, pediatric HIV and childhood TB, with specific reference to strengthening community health worker programs and primary health care systems throughout Africa and Asia, as well as providing leadership in global networks and partnerships for child health.
