Global health has seen significant progress in recent decades, and food is more abundant than ever before. Yet, millions of people remain food insecure and face hunger. Malnutrition continues to claim the lives of millions of children each year, while many more suffer from stunting, which has long-term impacts on their development. A large proportion of women and children experience iron and other micronutrient deficiencies, undermining their health and well-being.
Progress in reducing malnutrition and food insecurity remains fragile. The COVID-19 pandemic, along with other public health emergencies, climate shocks, and conflicts, has exposed the vulnerability of health care and food systems and the need for resilient solutions.
Addressing malnutrition and food insecurity requires coordinated, evidence-based action that is responsive to the needs of the populations. It also demands strong partnerships and innovative approaches that foster equitable access to nutritious food.
Our work contributes to understanding and addressing the nutrition and food security challenges faced by communities in vulnerable situations. In partnership with local organizations, we identify key problems, test solutions grounded in evidence and local knowledge and experience, and support governments in scaling up what works. We are committed to ensuring that women and children are prioritized in the realization of their right to good nutrition.
HealthBridge creates
Impact
Policy advocacy based on evidence can drive systemic change through supporting decision makers in recognizing and financing nutrition initiatives. In Vietnam, such efforts led to issuing a resolution by the National Assembly to implement nutrition initiatives within the National Targeted Program for ethnic minorities.
HealthBridge’s advocacy to preserve food markets in Hanoi, Vietnam is estimated to have protected walkable access to fresh and nutritious food for 2.5 million people. This outcome is also critical for creating an enabling environment where families can access affordable and nutritious food, especially those whose food baskets would otherwise shrink in both size and nutritional quality.
Our work supporting home gardening and promoting the consumption of local, micronutrient rich foods, has led to improved home gardening practices in remote communities and an increased consumption of diverse and nutritious foods among mothers and children.
Evidence-informed and culturally appropriate nutrition and food demonstration sessions in rural areas were well received by parents and caregivers, and contributed to increased nutrition knowledge, which equipped families with essential skills to improve Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices.
The ultimate impact of our work in nutrition and food security is more effective and sustainable programs and a deeper understanding of the factors that improve the nutrition and food security of people and communities living in vulnerable situations.
