Last month I wrote about barbed wire being used to block the median at the street that separates my home and office, so that crossing the street went from being scary and dangerous to truly terrifying. I was away for a couple of weeks, organizing seminars on liveable cities in Sri Lanka to government officials who expressed great interest in the concepts if only top-level policymakers would agree... On my return, I found, to my great relief, that the wire has been cut at the gaps in the median, so that we once again have a pedestrian island/refuge halfway across the street. Of course pedestrians still must race between the cars and still look terrified...and just a couple days ago in Dhaka, a girl lost her life walking to school. A little progress, a long ways to go. As for the ticketing system at the lake, it hasn’t yet been implemented and there has been significant media attention to the issue...but it’s too early to know what will happen. For the moment I continue to enjoy my walks and to yell at those who ride their motorbikes on the walking path. Well, one comforting thought: I am in no danger of working my way out of a job any time soon.
