Loneliness is perhaps an inevitable part of life, but our living arrangements can do much to enhance or decrease it. As more and more of our communications occur by electronic means, the need for face-to-face communication grows ever greater. We need to see others, to hear their voices, to interact with them. Even just being able to look out one’s window and watch people on the streets is better than nothing. Best of all are the places where interactions can happen spontaneously, unplanned, with many different kinds of people. This can occur as we cycle to work or walk to local shops, as we relax on a park bench, or as we travel on a bus or tram. We are indeed social animals; we need social interactions. We can design our cities to enhance the opportunities and qualities of those interactions, or we can isolate ourselves in our buildings and vehicles. The choice is ours.
