This morning as I was walking to work a young man rode his motorbike onto the sidewalk to avoid the congested street. I immediately blocked his path and reminded him of the previous day’s High Court decision to make the sidewalks motorcycle-free. He smiled at me and replied, “It hasn’t been implemented yet.” As we continued to argue, a policeman approached us and asked me what was the matter. I pointed: motorcycle on the sidewalk, that’s the problem. He promptly asked the driver for his paperwork. As I walked away, two young men approached me who had apparently witnessed but not heard the interaction, and informed me that there has just been a High Court decision banning motorbikes on the sidewalks. I have confronted motorcyclists many times, but this is the first time the confrontation, rather than infuriate me, made me laugh. I look greatly forward to the day when all such incidents will become a distant and bizarre memory.
