The mayor of the northern part of Dhaka announced on World Carfree Day that he would make a couple of streets carfree. In follow-up discussions, he decided to make several streets carfree, but wants advice on which ones to choose.
As a result, HealthBridge’s partner organization, Work for a Better Bangladesh, has recruited interns from the local urban planning department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). They have the fun job of selecting possible streets, designing what kinds of changes will be needed, and showing what kind of activities could happen on them. There will be abundant space for lively interactions, for socializing, for resting, for playing, and for a thriving local economy, once the cars and motorbikes disappear.
As the mayors of both north and south Dhaka wish to make the city greener, I hope they will see the possibility of planting more trees and creating more parks, if only we reduce first the number of personal motorized vehicles!
