Fewer cars, more life

I am back in Dhaka, where once again, as a result of political protests and burning of cars, there are very few cars on the streets. While Bangladesh is considered dangerous at the moment, it is in fact vastly safer to cross the street and to move around by foot, bicycle, and rickshaw than usual. It also takes a lot less time to get to different places than in the “normal” congested situation. Kids and teenagers play badminton, cricket, and football (soccer) in the streets. It is also much quieter than usual; the streets are full of life, but not overwhelmed with the roar of engines or the constant beeping of horns. I am enjoying this glimpse of Dhaka as a liveable city, while I help my colleagues at Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust try to turn the unusual into the norm.
