Once in a while someone does something that is simple and brilliant...or should I say simply brilliant?
Someone somewhere came up with the idea of turning the occasional parking space into a miniature park--usually temporarily, sometimes permanently. Searching for international photos, I discovered that the San Francisco government actually has a manual for citizens wanting to create a parklet in their neighborhood. Imagine that!
The more space we give to cars, the more they demand...instead, we can reclaim space from cars and return it to people, so that everyone has an attractive space to play within an easy walk of their homes.
Over the winter, interns from Asian University for Women worked with their hosts at Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust (WBB) to create a parklet...then went and did one in the city where their university is, in Chittagong. Yesterday my new batch of interns created a temporary parklet in Dhaka, showing the good fun people can have if we only carve out a bit of space for them.
May the movement spread all over Bangladesh and beyond!
