Walking near my home, I pause to pet a pregnant street dog. A woman in a burqa stops to ask me questions and watch with curiosity; soon a small crowd gathers. Men selling vegetables and live chickens join in the conversation. A small truck carrying a live camel gets stuck under low-hanging electric wires. I am again reminded of multiple award-winning Danish architect Jan Gehl’s description of streets as meeting the three M’s: movement, market, and meeting place. The best streets serve not just one or two, but all three of those functions; they contribute to the excitement of life in the city and remind residents that there is a lot more to life than getting from A to B.
