Making Vietnamese cities more liveable

Details

Population growth, development pressures, and a rapid increase in motorized transport mean that in some important respects, urban quality of life is on a sharp decline in Vietnam. Pollution levels are high, traffic is intense, and noise can become unbearable. Simply crossing the street can feel like a life-threatening activity. HealthBridge Vietnam seeks to improve living conditions for people in cities, with a focus on walking, cycling, and access to fresh, healthy foods. Another important aspect of our program is to facilitate socialization and physical activity among urban residents by improving urban public spaces such as parks. More and better parks mean more opportunities for urban dwellers to be physically active and to participate in community-life. We’ve already succeeded in the past in saving a major park in Hanoi and have helped create playgrounds in the smaller city of Hoi An, along with our partner Action for the City. Policymakers have begun to pay more attention to the issue of urban liveability, and we hope to see a steady momentum towards reining in traffic and making life better for people.
