The title of today’s entry is from a t-shirt that I saw a boy wearing at the beach yesterday. Much as I welcome the sentiment, it saddens me that it needs to be said and that for so many children, outdoor play is not an option. However enticing TV, computers, the internet, and mobile phones are, they are no replacement for the fun and social interactions of outdoor play with others in one’s neighbourhood. Children who walk to school and play outdoors, children who are not constantly chauffeured and sheltered by adults, learn important lessons about assessing and handling risks in their environment, about interacting with others, and about themselves. I look forward to the day when concern that children are getting too much screen time or not enjoying independent mobility and outdoor play are mere memories of a distant and bizarre past.
