For a brief spell in Dhaka, my ability to walk on my own to and from the office, or in the nearby park, was destroyed by the presence of a large and vicious dog. There are lots of stray dogs but only this one refused to be intimidated and consistently attempted to bite my dogs and even me. So for several weeks I had to ask someone to escort me and the dogs on our walks. I hated it. I hated trying to find someone to walk with us and having to wait around for an escort to appear, but most of all I hated the lack of spontaneity and independence. That most basic right of free and independent movement has great value…and yet we have sacrificed it throughout the world in exchange for the convenience of the automobile. We finally trapped the dog and moved her well out of town, but what will it take for us to rein in the car so that children, the elderly, those with disabilities, and everyone else can again freely, safely, and comfortably walk, unescorted, in cities?
