On a recent trip, I had several hours of transit in Istanbul, so I went out for a long walk. The city is full of beautiful places, but one incident particularly struck me. While wandering through a residential neighbourhood, I glanced at a young boy with a mental disability who was kicking a soccer ball against a wall. He looked back at me, stopped kicking the ball, approached me, and wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. After a long moment, he went back to his ball and I continued my walk. Although the rewards for moving through the city slowly are not always so great, they are significant. We don't know what we miss when we try to aim for speed and convenience. And as with so many things, when we do one thing right (try to get some exercise, move without using fuel, ...) we gain so much more as well.
