Decades ago when I occasionally used to accompany my mother to her gym class, a popular song was “These boots are made for walking.” When I see people’s footwear, I often wonder what they were made for, as the design suggests that the goal is certainly not easy movement by foot.
Similarly, one might wonder what the point of sidewalks is, as they seem not to be designed for walking—but rather for the movement and parking of cars and motorbikes. Bridges that are supposed to aid pedestrians to cross the street facilitate the movement of cars, not pedestrians, as it is a rare individual who willingly walks extra distance to then climb stairs simply to get across the street. And there is the question of why sidewalks are allowed to remain in damaged condition, impairing walking for everyone—and especially those with special challenges.
In response, my colleagues at Work for a Better Bangladesh have created a video (below) about walking—and the involvement of young people in creating better pedestrian environments. HealthBridge partners around the world are supporting this movement, which should ensure that sidewalks are indeed made for walking…and make it an inviting, fun activity, not a dangerous unpleasant chore!
