Male Village Health Workers are a vital part of their communities. Their job includes identifying diseases in the village and alerting the hospitals and community members to prevent their spread, promoting good hygiene and teaching people about nutrition and how to make healthy meals. Male Village Health Workers support men to understand why prenatal and postnatal care is important. They also encourage men to help their wives with household tasks, and teach them how to cook nutritious meals.
Male Village Health Workers get men, husbands and fathers involved in supporting maternal and child health by educating men to understand why prenatal and postnatal care is important. They also encourage men to help their wives with household tasks, and teach them how to cook nutritious meals. Through doing this, they are breaking gender barriers that prevent women from accessing maternal health services.

Meet Quang Van Bien, a Male Village Health Worker in a small village in Son La. Quang Van Bien monitors the health of the people in his village and alerts the local hospital if there is a disease outbreak. He also encourages mothers and children to update their vaccines and get regular check ups, especially during and after pregnancy. Quang Van Bien plays an important role to involve men in maternal health, and holds workshops for men to learn about how to care for pregnant women and ensure their future child’s health.
