Waxing poetic about buses

It is difficult to find writing that praises public transit. So I was rather pleased to find this poem by Spike Milligan:

Down the stream the swans all glide;
It's quite the cheapest way to ride.
Their legs get wet,
Their tummies wetter:
I think after all
The bus is better.

Then again, if the bus is only better than getting drenched, perhaps we need to put more thought into attracting people to public transit. Whimsy aside, the place to start, for public transit fans like myself, may be in chatting it up with our friends. Apparently a lot of people find public transit scary or unpleasant. I look at it as an opportunity to watch people and to have some time to myself without worrying about navigating the traffic. These days most people on the bus or train may be absorbed in their mobile phone or iPad, but at least they’re sharing the same physical space. Let’s talk up the benefits and question those concerns which are unfounded, while working to make public transit in our cities even better.
