Community engagement and youth leadership are important components of HealthBridge’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project in Dhaka’s underserved urban communities. Abir’s journey reflects how providing opportunities for young people can lead to strong local leadership and commitment.
In 2021, Abir joined the Improving SRHR in Dhaka project as a youth volunteer. After receiving training and mentorship, he became actively involved in community awareness sessions, door-to-door visits, health camps, and outreach campaigns promoting SRHR services. His commitment and leadership skills led to his selection in 2023 as the leader of the Manik Nagar Community Action Group (CAG), where he coordinated volunteer activities and encouraged greater community participation in SRHR awareness initiatives.
Before joining the project, Abir wanted to contribute to his community but lacked opportunities and direction. At the same time, many people in his community had limited awareness of SRHR and often hesitated to seek services due to stigma and misinformation.
“I always wanted to work for people, but I didn’t know where to start or how to make a real impact in my community,” shared Abir.
Through continuous engagement and teamwork, Abir gradually became a confident youth leader and role model for other volunteers. His contributions were recognized during the Exchange Sharing Meeting in 2026, where he received a Best Performer Award for his outstanding community engagement efforts.
Abir’s impact extended beyond his own involvement. Inspired by his work, his sister joined the project as a volunteer, while his mother supported community awareness sessions, further strengthening outreach efforts within their community.
Today, Abir is recognized as a respected youth leader and advocate for SRHR in his community. Reflecting on his journey, he said:
“This recognition motivates me to continue working for my community. With dedication and teamwork, we can create positive change.”
