"Earlier this year, I had the chance to see this project in action... As a result of the project, the communities’ food base was considerably improved due to the raising of healthier chickens, and the growing of more nutritious vegetables," said Canada's Ambassador to Vietnam, David Devine, at a workshop on March 10 to discuss results of the HealthBridge project From Field to Fork: Nutrition and Food Security in Uplands of Vietnam and Thailand.
"They were also educating members of the community about nutrition and a healthier diet. The result is simple: the community is healthier than before," added the ambassador.
He added that malnutrition and food security remains a serious concern in both Vietnam and Thailand, particularly among ethnic minorities living in remote, upland areas. On average, 1 in 5 children across Vietnam are underweight, noted the ambassador.
"The research that we will be hearing about today has sought to identify local and practical solutions to improve nutrition and food security among smallholder farmers in rural communities in Vietnam and Thailand. "
